The creator of the salish people is known as a kind elderly man who lived in the sky world alone. He created 5 women from five hairs from his head and asked them what they wanted to be. Each gave him a different answer: 1) she wanted to be wickedness and cruelty 2) goodness 3) mother of the earth 4) fire 5) water. The creator did as they asked, he then said to them "That wickedness would rule earth for a time, but goodness would win in the end". So after the creation of the earth creator put the "animal people" on the earth: coyote, beaver, buffalo, fox, otter etc; he then put the water in the oceans, the land became dry except for the lakes and rivers. Coyote often became lonely so he went to the sky world to talk with the creator. One time he was so unhappy that he was crying, creator then asked "Why are you so unhappy that you are crying? Have i not made land for you to run on? aren't the other animal people there keeping you company?" Coyote replied "They are to busy with their families to visit me. I want people of my own, so that i may watch over them." Creator than looked at him and said "Stop shedding water coyote, i will make people for you." So the creator then took the last mud balls from the earth and fashioned them into people. Creator then said to Coyote " They are your responibility to teach them and watch over them, take care of your people coyote." Coyote then was happy because he now had people to visit him but not only that he was put in charge to teach the native people how to do things, to teach them to make life easier and better for them. I thought i should post my creation story just incase you guys want to read it or whatever.
